Are Book Publishers Still Relevant Today?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of book publishers in today’s rapidly changing publishing world. With self-publishing platforms growing fast, do traditional publishers still offer meaningful advantages to authors? Are they necessary for credibility, distribution, and long-term success, or can writers thrive independently? How do new authors decide which path is right for them without feeling overwhelmed? I’d love to hear real experiences and opinions are book publishers still essential gatekeepers, or is the industry moving toward a more independent future?
